Out of the two stories I’ve read, the one I can see myself in is “Cousins”. Because this story is so relatable, everyone has a friend or family member that they have had a disagreement with but made up afterward. In the stories “Growing up in Therapy” I’ve never been to therapy so I can’t relate to what she was going through and second, I don’t have the mental disorder she has so, it’s hard from me to understand what she is going through.
I think that the author of “Cousin” story wasn’t over told, because, the author gives you just enough information to understand the story. Moreover, I feel that the author of “Growing up in Therapy” gave us a little too much. I think that the story dug on more than it should have with no clear point made. Both stories tell a story. And both stories address the description and visualization. For example, when the author of “Cousins” said “I am a fool for letting you leave like that. I should have never let my cousin leave in the middle of the night, off into a rainstorm that was sure to obstruct the 1,300-mile journey that laid before her.” I can picture some in a car, upset, driving in the rain. And when Lena Dunham says “Sitting with my mother in the beauty salon one afternoon, I come across an article about obsessive-compulsive disorder. A woman describes her life, so burdened with obsessions that she has to lick art in museums and crawl on the sidewalk.” I can picture a little girl sitting in a chair reading a magazine.
I feel that both stories give enough details, but I also feel that Lena story is too detailed, in my opinion, she was repeating the same information but at different ages. I just felt that some of her information didn’t add to her story. I do get the sense of truth-telling from one of the two stories. “Cousins,” told a story that was relatable and that could be true because for one it was short and second, it seems like the memories aren’t all the way there. Lena story is too detail and specific to me which leads me to believe that she made of some stuff.
I like how you mention that Dunham's memoir "was repeating the same information." I also noticed that as well. However, I believe that her memoir did display some truth-telling, but it's hard to be certain. While I'm not quite sure if she made some of her story up, I do kind of get the feeling that some of it was an over-exaggeration.
