Week 11: The true effects of a racist nation

While looking for a piece of writing that gathered information and proposed a call for change, I stumbled across a truly fascinating study and blog. Racial issues are still to this day one of the largest and most discussed issues facing our nation. However, it's rare we actually discuss the effects racism has on our citizens individually. We often see and discuss the effects racism plays on our justice system and the lack of privilege received by minorities but we never discuss the effects it has on the minds and wellbeing of minorities. The study my blog focused on studied the chemicals and brain actions across minorities and figured out the effect feeling and experiencing racism has on the brain. In many cases, the study found first handedly experiencing racism directed towards one had a direct correlation to depression, suicide, mental illness, as well as even imbalances on the brains chemical levels such as reduced serotonin and imbalanced dopamine. As someone who lives in this era of racial tension and conflict, I think this piece of writing does a great job of sending a message. We are mentally and physically hurting our brothers and sisters within our country, this has a scientific effect on the brain. Too often those with racist beliefs either just fail to see the damage their actions cause, or they do not care and both scenarios are very heartbreaking. Care about your neighbors.
